As time goes on, more and more movies are being filmed here in our Steel City. Is anyone surprised? This city is filled with awesome landscapes and colorful backdrops. The increase in the Pennsylvania Film Tax didn’t hurt our economy, either. If you’re unsure, this means that Pennsylvania offers a 25% tax credit to any movie that uses 60% of its production budget here.
Right now, there are a number of movies filming here at the moment, in theaters, and coming out soon that were filmed right here in Pittsburgh.
Movies in Production
–Southpaw: Jake Gyllenhaal and Rachel McAdams were spotted recently eating downtown at Meat and Potatoes, checking out the city when they got a break in filming. This movie currently has no release date, but is about a boxer crawling his way to the top, whilst struggling with his own issues along the way.
–Me, Earl, and the Dying Girl: This flick does not have a release date yet, either, but it is about a teenager who is forced to become friends with a girl with Cancer. No guest stars are listed yet on IMDB.com as of yet, either, although it will start filming here in two weeks, so I’m sure we’ll get more details then.
Coming Soon(ish) to Theaters
–Foxcatcher: This movie stars Channing Tatum, Mark Ruffalo, and Steve Carell. It went to Cannes in April, and is slated to release in November of this year. This is a biopic about Mark Schultz, a former Olympic Wrestler.
–Fathers and Daughters: This movie just finished up filming here in Pittsburgh in Mid-May. It stars Russell Crowe, Aaron Paul, and Amanda Seyfried. This movie is supposed to come out in 2015, and is about a father struggling to live, in spite of the fact that he is a widower and dealing with a mental breakdown.
In Theaters Now
–The Fault in Our Stars: This movie, which was filmed here in the ‘Burgh, is estimated to have made 81,700,000 to date, and that is just how much it’s made domestically. It stars Shailene Woodley, Willem Dafoe, and Ansel Elgort, and is about a boy and a girl who met at a Cancer support group and fell in love soon after.
–Million Dollar Arm: You can learn more about this movie in a previous blog I wrote here.
